Legiao urbana

Legião Urbana is a Brazilian rock band founded in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, which remained active between 1982 and 1996>. They released sixteen albums, totaling more than 20 million records sold. Even today, it is the third largest music group in terms of the number of CDs sold in the EMI world catalog, with an average of 250,000 copies per year. The end of the group was caused by the death of its leader and singer Renato Russo (pt) , October 11, 1996. The group is one of the record sales record holders in Brazil, with two diamond albums>.

The group was formed from the dissolution of Renato Russo's predecessor group, Aborto Elétrico (electrical abortion), in August 1982, in Brasilia, Brazil>. In the late 1970s, until the mid-1980s, the city of Brasilia experienced the peak of a period of great cultural excitement. The rock scene was the result of the spread among young people of the revolutionary ideals generalized by the students of the University of Brasilia (UNB), but also of a strong presence of foreigners in the city, most of them composed of children of international representatives of embassies and consulates of the federal capital of Brazil. These teenagers brought with them albums and attitudes characteristic of the punk movement that erupted at that time in Europe and the United States. According to researcher and journalist Olimpio Cruz Neto, about 300 rock bands existed in Brasilia in the middle of the 1980s.

It was in this context that Renato Russo joined with members Marcelo Bonfá (drums), Dado Villa Lobos (grand nephew of the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos, guitar) and Renato Rocha (bass), and formed a rock band heavily influenced by the sound and messages of bands such as Sex Pistols, Ramones, Buzzcocks, Joy Division, Gang of Four, but at both inserted into the socio-economic and cultural reality of Brazil, which lived at that time a period of exception marked by a military dictatorship.

In 1983, the group was hired by the EMI label, and after a series of concerts, recorded his first album between October and December 1984, in a recording studio in Rio de Janeiro. The album was released on January 2, 1985. Many of his songs would have become standards of Brazilian music. The album sold 100,000 copies in the first month. After 25 years, the album has sold more than 500,000 copies.
