The Birthday Massacre is a gothic rock band, mixing various influences from synthpop, gothic music, and metal, based in Toronto, Canada. The group formed in 1999, known at the time as Imagica, a name from a novel by Clive Barker. They have developed a very marked atmospheric music and a fantastic and magical imagery based notably on nocturnal and rural atmospheres.

The group formed in 1999, under the name Imagica, when Rainbow (guitar and programming) and Mr. Falcore (guitar) meet Chibi (vocals) and Aslan (bass) in college. In 2000, Dank, a friend of Chibi, joined the group as a keyboardist. O.E. responds to an ad in order to join the band as a drummer.

In 2001, the group moved to Toronto and recorded a demo CD in limited edition. Shortly before the release of the CD, the group adopts the name of The Birthday Massacre (title of one of their songs, which was then renamed Happy Birthday), to avoid confusion with another group also called Imagica.
