The Drums

The Drums is an American indie pop band from Brooklyn, New York. It is composed of members from the ephemeral group Elkland (previously Goat Explosion). The group is composed of singer Jonathan Pierce, guitarists Jacob Graham and Adam Kessler and drummer Connor Hanwick. The band is currently signed to the Moshi Moshi Records / Island Records (United Kingdom), Popfrenzy (AU) and Downtown Records (US) labels.

Founding members Pierce and Graham meet as children at a summer camp. Shortly after their first meeting, they formed Goat Explosion, an electro-pop group that gives concerts in North America. They then separate for a few years. Pierce forms the independent rock band Elkland, which quickly becomes noticed and signed by Columbia Records. Graham created Horse Shoes which is signed by Shelflife Records. But both tired of electronic music, they decide to trade synthesizers against guitars, and form The Drums at the end of 2008 in New York. They recruit drummer Connor Hanwick and former Elkland guitarist Adam Kessler.

In December 2009, the group was part of the 15 groups of BBC Sound of 2010, ranking of the most promising new talents. They are ranked # 5 in this ranking on January 4, 2010. The Drums were also featured in the December 2009 / January 2010 issue of Cliché Magazine. The article featured an exclusive interview between editor Miguel Ángel Jimenez and drummer Connor Hanwick>. In the first issue of 2010 NME magazine, the group is ranked first "best tips" for the year 2010, as in Clash Magazine. The Drums are elected Best Hope 2010 in 2009 by readers of Pitchfork magazine.

In February 2010, the band is giving several concerts throughout the UK as it was part of the 2010 NME Awards tour, alongside The Maccabees, Bombay Bicycle Club and The Big Pink. The Drums is the first part of the Florence and the Machine's Cosmic Love tour. In June 2010, they play the first part of Kings of Leon in Hyde Park, London. On May 7, 2010, they play Best Friend in the Friday Night with Jonathan Ross. Adam Kessler, the guitarist, left the band on September 16, 2010, while the band is touring the United States.
