Pixinguinha

Alfredo da Rocha Viana , known by the pseudonym Pixinguinha , (born in Rio de Janeiro, April 23, 1897 and died in that city, February 17, 1973), is a Brazilian flutist, saxophonist, composer, singer, arranger and conductor.

Alfredo da Rocha Viana was born in April 23, 1897 and began playing the flute and saxophone around the year 1920. He founded the group Oito Batutas, with João Pernambuco and Donga. In 1916, he composed Carinhoso, and in 1928 Lamentos. He receives many criticisms deemed unjust, to influence him and direct him to the Jazz.

He also sings with Vinícius de Moraes and Carmen Miranda. He was, along with Heitor Villa-Lobos, one of the greatest composers of Brazilian popular music, especially Choro.

He died in February 17, 1973, in the church of Nossa Senhora da Paz, Ipanema, when he must be godfather of a ceremony of baptism.
