The Guess Who is a Canadian rock band from Winnipeg, Manitoba. The band enjoyed international fame in the late 1960s and early 1970s with hit singles like No Time, American Woman, Laughing, These Eyes, Undun and Share the Land. The group will continue to play in various venues; and in particular with renowned musicians like Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman (Bachman-Turner Overdrive). Formed as a garage rock band, their musical style is pop rock and psychedelic rock.
Their first band name is Chad Allan and the Expressions, before their record company tried to hide their name with the words Guess Who? ("Guess who?" In French) thus suggesting the presence of the famous British band The Who. The concept worked well. Their style has evolved with the composition of the group.
They took over Shakin 'All Over in 1965. In 1969, These Eyes is the first big hit with Burton Cummings as leader of the group. In the early 1970s, they moved towards a sound closer to hard rock with the album American Woman, whose eponymous song was their only first place in the American hit parade, and When Friends Fall Out (a kind of mix between Strawberry Alarm Clock, Jefferson Airplane and the Lennon Sisters). American Woman is even the first song of a Canadian band to reach the top of the charts in the US> and is also a song written as a protest against the Vietnam War.
Discrepancies lead Randy Bachman to leave the band to create the Bachman-Turner Overdrive, guitarist Kurt Winter replaces him and The Guess Who continues to produce hit titles: Follow Your Daughter Home, Samantha's Living Room, Share the Land and Clap for the Wolfman (a tribute to DJ Wolfman Jack who lent his own voice to the recording). The Guess Who separate in 1975.
