The Hives

The Hives is a Swedish punk garage band from Fagersta. Formed in 1993, it is a band known for its theatrical performances and 1960s garage anthems. It refers to the first punk band The Sonics and especially to the legendary American rock band The Fleshtones.

The singer, Pelle Almqvist, is compared by some to Mick Jagger. We can notice a certain physical resemblance, cultivated by Almqvist that takes Jagger's attitudes. The Hives are also noted for their famous black and white suits, part of their group image from the 1960s (note also the nicknames of some members of the band), and their particular humor (on the booklets of their records, on their site, etc.).

The group says it was formed in 1993 under the leadership of Randy Fitzsimmons. He suggested they form a garage rock band. He is allegedly described as the author of the texts of the group. In 1995, they were signed by Peter Almqvist at Sidekick Records, a division of the Swedish skate / punk label Burning Heart Records. The following year they launched their first EP Oh Lord! When? How ?. Almqvist decided to promote the band directly to the Burning Heart Records label itself.

The year 1997 saw the release of Hives' debut album, Barely Legal (from an old Vigilante stage name), and the band began shooting. The following year they release their second EP, a.k.a I-D-I-O-T. At the time, the group ranked in the category of "punk rock'n roll" in the lineage of bands such as the American New Bomb Turks. The song a.k.a I-D-I-O-T, as well as the music video, have most certainly been inspired by the Hammerless Nail tube of the New Bomb Turks released in 1996 on Epitaph Records.
