Sodom

Sodom is a group, or quartet, of German thrash metal from Gelsenkirchen. They change training several times, and only bassist and singer Tom Angelripper remains the only original member remaining. With Kreator, Destruction and Tankard, Sodom is considered one of the big four of German thrash metal. As of date, Sodom has fifteen studio albums, three live albums, two compilation and six EPs.

The band was founded in 1982 by Tom Angelripper (vocals, bass), Aggressor (guitar) and Chris Witchhunter (drums). They are the leaders of the German thrash metal scene alongside Kreator, Tankard and Destruction groups. Sodom's original band includes Tom Angelripper on vocals and bass, Bloody Monster on guitar and Aggressor on drums. After many changes of guitarists in the group, Sodom finally released his first studio album, "Obsessed By Cruelty" , in 1986. It is about a thrash metal work with elements that will influence black metal bands. This album is not very well received by the critics, who describe the group of "exact copy of Venom, with words not very inventive and which will quickly fall into oblivion. The group's second studio album, "Persian Mania ", is better received, mainly because the album is more in thrash metal classical music, and that the music is generally more mature than its predecessor.

After a great tour that lasted most of the years 1987-1988, the band released the album that will really make him known on the metal scene, Agent Orange. This album will indeed have a great commercial success: more than 100,000 copies of the album will be sold in Germany alone. It is still today the best-selling German thrash metal album. After releasing their album Better Off Dead played in a traditional thrash metal, the band then released a much more distinguished album, Tapping the Vein , which will stand out from other albums by features of death metal, found only in this album. The next album, "Get What You Deserve" , stands out from other albums because of its Punk rock elements mixed with the band's usual thrash metal. The cover of the album, relatively grotesque, will be a surprise for most fans of the group. From the 'Til Death Do Us Unite album, the band is turning a corner in their career. Indeed, the album marks the beginning of the stabilization in the formation of the group and also at the level of the style, the group having really found its own style. The albums Code Red , M-16 and Sodom will be in the same lineage as the latter.

The band released their album Better off Dead in 1990. On their South American tour, Hoffman decides to stay in Brazil and is forced to leave the band. Andy Brings replaces him and a new album is released, Tapping the Vein, with a more death metal oriented sound. This is the last album that drummer Witchhunter participates: he is dismissed from the group and replaced by Atomic Steif, former member of the Holy Moses and Living Death.
