Black Oak Arkansas is a Southern American rock band from Black Oak, Arkansas. The band reached its peak of popularity in the 1970s with ten top-rated albums. Their musical style is characterized by the presence of multiple guitarists and the particular voice and stage attitude of his singer, Jim "Dandy" Mangrum.

The band, originally known as The Knowbody Else, was formed in 1965 in Black Oak, Arkansas, by Jim "Dandy" Mangrum (vocals), Rickie Reynolds (guitar), Stanley Knight (guitar), Harvey Jett (guitar) Pat Daugherty (bass) and Wayne Evans (drums)>. Their first amplification system is stolen from a high school in the city and members of the group, even if they were not present, are sentenced to theft for 26 days at the Tucker Prison Farm (the sentence is set aside a little later). This affair brings the group into exile in the rolling hills of northeastern Arkansas where they have redefined their musical style. Among the groups that influenced them were the Beatles and the Byrds.

Knowbody Else moved to Memphis, Tennessee in 1969 where they signed a contract with Stax Records. The Knowbody Else, their first and only album produced by Stax, makes a flop. At the same time, the group is interested in psychedelic music and oriental philosophy, which, combined with their education in the southern United States, have contributed to the evolution of their style.
