He remains one of the most popular blues singers of the 1920s. In all, his studio career does not exceed three years.
Lemon Henry Jefferson was born in Couchman, Texas, near Wortham. It was long believed that he was born in 1897, but research conducted a century later reveal a census on which his birth is specified on September 24, 1893. His parents, Alec and Clarissy Banks Jefferson, are sharecroppers.
In the same way, historians do not agree on Jefferson's blindness. Indeed, some think he was born blind while for others, his eyesight has deteriorated over time for unknown reasons. This ambiguity rests on his nickname Blind Lemon that can be translated as blind defective.
