The Traveling wilburys

The Traveling Wilburys was an Anglo-American supergroup, consisting of Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison. Drummer Jim Keltner was nicknamed the "Sixth Wilbury".

In 1988, George Harrison asked Bob Dylan to use his studio in Malibu to record a song, Handle with Care, to appear in front of B This Is Love, from his solo album Cloud Nine. He brings Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne, with whom he had lunch that day. Dylan and Tom Petty, also present, join the session, which turns to the party. Thus the Traveling Wilburys> are born. Originally, Tom Petty was not supposed to be part of the group, but George Harrison having forgotten his guitar at home, invited him to join them by going to get this one.

Handle with Care is diverted from its original destination (for which the producers consider it too valuable for a side B) and becomes the first piece of an album written by the five accomplices (mainly Dylan and Harrison) and recorded in ten days at Dave Stewart (Eurythmics). This album, Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1, was released in October 1988. Each of the partners appeared under a pseudonym, all being supposed to be half-brothers of the Wilbury family. The corresponding video also arrives on MTV without the slightest mention of their real identities and with a visual suspense skillfully managed, which immediately creates questions. Would it be look-alikes? The voices are nevertheless those of the five artists, and the doubt is quickly raised. The desired erasure of the egos to serve the music itself creates an unexpected craze and this realization originally thought of as a simple party will be acquired by five million people, becoming a mythical "hit": the album is indeed ranked in the Top 100 Best Albums of All Time>.

A second album is immediately started. Despite the death of Roy Orbison in December 1988, the other four continued their collaboration and the band's second album, intentionally entitled Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3, appeared in October 1990. However, his success was less than that of the first album. It is true that the voice of Roy Orbison is no longer there.
