Wanda Lavonne Jackson , born October 20, 1937 in Maud, Oklahoma (United States), is an American singer of rock 'n' roll and country music, one of the most first women to be successful in these styles. It has often been described as the feminine equivalent of Gene Vincent.
Wanda Jackson is the daughter of Tom Jackson Robert and Nellie Vera Jackson. She was born in Maud, Oklahoma in 1937, but lived much of her childhood in Oklahoma City. As a child, she learns piano and guitar. His father, a musician, decided to move with his family to California in the 1940s, hoping for a better life. Two years later, he buys a guitar from Wanda and strongly encourages him to play. He also takes him to see Spade Cooley, Tex Williams and Bob Wills concerts.
In 1948, when she was 11, her family returned to Oklahoma. In 1956, she won a talent contest, which allowed her to get her own radio show, soon extended by 30 minutes.
