Zz top

ZZ Top (pronounce ) is an American blues rock band from Houston, Texas. He knows the height of his celebrity in the 1970s and 1980s. The members of this trio are Billy Gibbons (vocals and guitar), Dusty Hill (vocals and bass) and Frank Beard (drums).

This is one of the only bands in the 1970s to have never changed their band since the release of their first album in 1971. After 50 years of almost uninterrupted career, the band has sold more than 70 million of albums around the world, half of them in the United States.

The legendary origin of their name remains relatively obscure. Some say it is the name of the cigarette paper used at the time by the members of the group. For others, the group would have taken this name so that their albums are always the last in the record tanks (vinyls at the time) of all the record stores (the classification in these bins being most often alphabetical). A rumor also persists about the fact that it is simply a typo, the group to be called initially "22 top" and not "zz top". The name may also come from the blues artist Z. Hill Z. (en) ; hill meaning "hill" hence "top of the hill" = ZZ Top.

Billy Gibbons explains in the Rock + Roll Gearhead book that the name is chosen in honor of blues master B.B. King. They would initially have chosen to be called "ZZ King" but it still looked too much like the original and considering that this "King" was at the "Top", they would have opted for ZZ Top>.
