Dimmu borgir

Dimmu Borgir is a Norwegian symphonic black metal band from Oslo. Formed in 1993, the group takes its name from a volcanic formation observed in Iceland, at Dimmuborgir. The group has undergone many changes at the level of its members, the guitarist Silenoz and the singer Shagrath remaining the only two founding members at the moment.

The group is formed in 1993 by Shagrath, Silenoz and Tjodalv, quickly joined by Brynjard Tristan and Stian Aarstad. Dimmu Borgir's career begins with the EP Inn I Evighetens Morke in 1994 followed closely by the first album For All Tid (with appearances of Dødheimsgard ldrahn and Ved Buens Ende's Vicotnik). Shagrath was then in charge of drums and vocals, Silenoz and Tjodalv on guitars, Bjorn Tristan on bass and Stian Aarstad on keyboard. On For All Tid , the sound of guitars and vocals is very raw, like the Norwegian black metal of the time. However, the group uses many keyboards (among the first with Emperor) to add a melancholy atmosphere to the music. The tempo is rather slow, which makes some say that the album belongs to the ambient black metal. All lyrics are sung in Norwegian >>>.

The band's second album, Stormblåst , was released in 1996 on the Cacophonous Records label, and quickly became a hit in the underground>. Despite the presence of an atmospheric keyboard, riffs and melodies are more complex, more sought after and faster. The album still serves as a reference in the genre.

After the release of Stormblåst , Dimmu Borgir decides to replace Norwegian with English for writing song lyrics, "to better pass the message in the world "according to Shagrath's words. For the following mini-album (EP), "Devil's Path" , the group debauches Nagash from The Kovenant (Covenant).

Stian Aarstad does not provide keyboards on this album because he is accused, rightly, of plagiarism of a video game by resuming, without warning the group, an audio theme of a video game, on the title Sorgens Kammer (this is Tim Wright's composition on the game Agony , published by Psygnosis in 1992 on Amiga). The official reason for his departure is "because of military service".
