Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros is a California group formed in 2007 in Los Angeles. It is composed of singer Alex Ebert and a dozen musicians.

After breaking up with his girlfriend at the time, Alexander Ebert leaves home to join a longtime friend, Nicholas Raymond Kellen, and decides to follow a twelve-step therapy, the Twelve-Step Program (en) . In parallel, he begins to write a book about a messianic figure he calls Edward Sharpe. Ebert defines him as "a being who came to earth to save men ... But who would still be able to be distracted by the fairer sex and fall in love?" During this period, he meets Jade Castrinos.

In 2009, Alexander Ebert, Jade Castrinos and a troupe of musicians, most of them longtime friends, founded Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. The band goes on a bus tour through the United States. The musical style is far removed from Alexander Ebert's previous collaborations with Ima Robot.
