Atheist

Atheist is an American death metal band from Sarasota, Florida. Their highly technical musical style is a mix of brutal riffs and Latin arrangements, a bit in the spirit of Cynic's cult album, Focus. They are part of a wave of increasingly technical metal bands like Watchtower, Sadus, Death, Coroner, and Cynic.

The group was formed in 1984 in Sarasota, Florida, initially under the name Oblivion> and later R.A.V.A.G.E. (a diminutive of Raging Atheists Vowing A Gory End ) >>>. They record their first album, in "> Piece of Time , in 1988, which is published in Europe in 1989, but not in the United States until 1990 In 1991, bassist Roger Patterson dies in a car accident, and Atheist recruits Tony Choy (former member of Cynic) for the recording of their second album, Unquestionable Presence . Atheist separated for the first time in 1992, meeting in 1993, then recording their third album "Elements" , before separating a second time.

Seven years after the second separation, Kelly Shaefer decides to re-edit and remaster their first three albums accompanied by different bonus songs. Shaefer plays with Neurotica until 2002, while Tony Choy plays in several other bands like Area 305 and Pestilence. In 2001, Kelly Shaefer tries to regroup the original members and the legendary Kyle Sokol on the bass guitar, replacing Tony Choy, but nothing goes as planned. Relapse Records reissues the first three albums of the band at the end of 2005, as well as a vinyl box of the first three albums accompanied by the demo On They Slay of RAVAGE Former drummer Steve Flynn formed the group Gnostic the same year.

In January 2006, Atheist announced its meeting during a live performance in summer and autumn that same year. The training then includes Shaefer, Burkey, Choy and Flynn. Shaefer only participates in singing because of tendonitis and carpal tunnel syndrome. On July 12, 2008, Shaefer announces that he is working with Flynn on new songs. A month later, Shaefer announces a new album, which should be their first in over 15 years. The band toured Europe and the United States in 2009 to celebrate the twentieth year of their album "Piece of Time" . A live DVD is shot at the Wacken Open Air festival and published at the end of the year.
