Take It Down - daniel9388

First of all, wow, those drums are loud...
And pizzicato strings in the outro were a rather strange choice...

This song is a bit of a mixed bag - you have some interesting ideas, but they aren't executed as well as they should. The chorus doesn't really feel like a chorus. Some of the riffs leave a little to be desired, and the drums in some parts don't really work. For example, the latter half of the chorus is simply POUND POUND POUND on the snare. It can work in certain contexts, but not really this one... :/

I feel like you should've utilised the church organ more - I was hoping for some grand use of it. Also, I feel like that in parts, the bass was a little too high - for this style, I think you need a deep sound - and so you should use bass in it's comfortable range. That's just my thoughts, though.

One thing I need to say - I really like that drum fill on bar 70.

2.5 stars.

hi daniel. this song is quite interesting, very unique riffs, but they kinda just hang in there you know what i mean? like it could have been any order. bass slides are cool, and the last part sounds like pokemon.

...on the plus side - you're starting to toy around with added instrumentation, and it's pretty okay - the church organ is decent, and the pizzicato in the outro is pure win. the riffs featured are typical daniel, catchy, addictive, simple, win. I'm not too keen on the chorus though, it just comes out of nowhere and sucks. lose the chorus, add something good in there, and I'll enjoy the song a whole lot more :P

I'll be honest with you: after listening a few of your songs, the main impression is that, while rhythmically you have all the good ideas, harmonically it's a bit of a confusing experience, tending to be all over the place - in some of them I don't even know in which key are you playing... maybe it's all part of your concept of metal, but I reckon you need to rethink your style. As it is, it's all good if we're just to close our eyes and headbang, but if we go a little more in-depth, things begin to be "less good".

On to this song then. It starts well, the organ combined with the bass sounds very grim, the other instruments get introduced step by step, and then the short break before the pre-verse, everything in this part is well executed and creates a good atmosphere.

The verse riff is enjoyable too, maintaining the atmosphere from the beginning, and even if the odd harmonies start showing in the pre-chorus, it flows well. But then that chorus... it seems completely out of place in this song, more like some sort of Sesame-Street metal actually. The evil feeling you had going on gets broken, a shame really...

Bridge is ok, the short lead brings back some evil into it, even if it's a bit cliché (reminded me of old horror movies...). And there's the organ again! The whole song could have benefited from a more extensive use of it. Outro is weird O.O - pizzicato str + keychange + oddly sounding choir... but I kinda like it. Too bad it ends so quickly, I felt a little more development of this part was in order, the whole song is a bit short as it is.

So... I don't know. Maybe I'm being too harsh on you, or maybe I don't understand this kind of music. But in the end, although you manage to keep some originality within the scope of metal (hard thing to do), there's that odd harmony issue, some occasional confusion of moods, and the good ideas you have often lack some refinement before they can turn into a really good song.

Don't know what to say about this one. The intro was fine, but then the rest of the song begins. There are good ideas, but the drums are way too boring and also the bass adds almost nothing to the riffs. Too bad, because this could be a great song I think.

2 stars.
