GP5 Scroll Up / Freeze

I just want to know if this happens to anybody else...

Just going along with the flow tabbing my music and I decide to scroll up to check something and then, freeze. After the freeze I check task manager and it is taking up a good 98% chunk of the CPU.

Here is a screenshot for documentation:

http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/59/gpfreeze.th.jpg

This freeze is reproducible just by opening up any tab and then start scrolling down and up. Sometimes it's immediate and sometimes it takes a few scrolls.

This little bug was introduced with 5.0 and has stayed since.

Don't need help or anything, just giving information just in case it has been bugging anybody.

Re: GP5 Scroll Up / Freeze

Never happened to me and I use GP 5.0 regularly. I do sometimes get error messages when scrolling or clicking on a specific section of a tab, but that's due to invalid notation. If I were you I'd troubleshoot it by gradually deleting small parts of the tab near the point you suspect the freeze occurs and seeing if it still does.

Maybe it is only x64 that makes it do this because every tab does it.

Never happens to me neither, and I'm using XP x64 and GP 5.2. Probably there is something worng with your setup or installation.

A very curious problem indeed!  The only thing I can think of is that your graphics card drivers, and/or your system's display settings, are causing the problem.  It's a long shot, but try the following:

Right-click on the shortcut or the main EXE of Guitar Pro and select Properties, then click the Compatibility tab.  From here, click "Run in 256 colours" and then "OK".  Try scrolling in GP now and see if it has worked.  If it has, it could indicate that you need to reinstall/update your graphics card drivers.  If it hasn't, repeat the steps outlined above and remove the 256 colour option from the compatibility tab.

An even longer shot could be your mouse drivers, assuming you are either using your mouse's left-button or the scroll wheel to scroll the page in GP (have you tried scrolling with the cursor keys?).  I had a wireless optical mouse while using Vista x64 and certain programs wouldn't scroll properly, but it worked fine with the same programs on an x86 O/S.  If your mouse is a USB or PS/2 one ignore this, otherwise try updating the drivers/software for it.

Good luck!

Re: GP5 Scroll Up / Freeze

Here is the response it gave me to the "256 colours":

http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/1121/256colours.th.jpg

And also I am using a generic optical mouse I got off of an HP, never an issue with anything else but GPRO. Scroll works extremely well with everything, it is one of the reasons why I even keep it.

I could look to see if there are drivers for it, but I doubt it.

I can scroll up and down all day in GP4 with no issue but ever since GP5 I have to pay attention to exactly what I am doing with the mouse.

Haha well, it was a long-shot!  At least we've ruled out the possibility that it's a driver issue.  Unfortunately I'm all out of ideas smiley-blush

Re: GP5 Scroll Up / Freeze

Update, fresh install of XP (New Motherboard) and the problem persists.

Is there a problem with installing GPRO outside the program files directory?
I have it installed on my secondary hd with most other programs I use quite frequently.

Re: GP5 Scroll Up / Freeze

It looks like GP5 and your mouse don't get on very well...
Did you check whether you get the same issue with another mouse (not a wireless one, that is)?
Also, HP devices often come with a specific driver; it may be worth checking.

Re: GP5 Scroll Up / Freeze

Just checked, still does it with 2 other mice. And for more clarification I used an old PS/2 "Ball" mouse with a scroller and it still does it.

Has anybody actually tried to duplicate it?

Open up GP5, open up any tab and start scrolling up and down.

EDIT::.

Just tried it on a separate computer and it also freezes under the same circumstances. So now I know it isn't localized to my machine.

.::Update::.

Well I'm on a different installation of windows and more importantly a x86 version (32bit).

No more scroll up freeze, don't know if that could be an issue of it being 64bit windows in which it would occur but it just seems like the simplest explanation so far.

Re: GP5 Scroll Up / Freeze

I can scroll without any problems on Vista Ultimate SP2 x64, so I don't think that's the issue.  I just tried scrolling in every view, and then in every view again with the multitrack option pressed, and there was no freezing.  I tried this both when the tab was stopped and whilst it was playing, and also with the RSE turned on and off.

How much RAM does your system have?  And what sort of processor?  If you're using a mouse with a ball in it it's probably quite an old system.  Here are the minimum requirements:

If your system doesn't satisfy (or only slightly exceeds) these requirements it might explain the problem.  That's the only other thing I can think of.  I do know that back when GP5 first came out my system at the time wasn't up to much, and I seem to recall having issues with the screen sticking and jerking a little bit.  It was so long ago (nearly 4 years!!) that I can't remember it clearly, but I don't think there was any prolonged freezing.  Now my system is quite beefy, and I never have any issues (other than the errors we all get from time to time!).

My system put quite plainly at the time:

AMD Athlon x64 3400+ 2.19 GHz
4 Gigs of ram
3 300 gig SATA HDs
Nvidia GeForce 9400 GT 512 Mb

Running XP x64

Last time I used a mouse with a ball in it was over 5 years ago

I have near the same setup now running XP 32bit only with 2 hd's and made my 3rd one external for travel purposes/xbox 360 movie viewing

So the only real big change here is now I'm running 32bit until I gather up some cash to buy windows 7 and dualboot.

Haha well, I think we can rule out low system specs!!

Ahh, I thought you said you were using one now.  My mistake.

This probably doesn't matter now that you've tried different systems/operating systems since your original post, but did you ever get around to updating your graphics card drivers to see if that helps?

Yeah, that was one of the first things I did, I usually update my graphics card when I can no matter if needed or not.
