Public Image Limited , sometimes typographically Public Image Ltd or Public Image Ltd. , and often abbreviated PIL , is a British post-punk band from London, England. He was formed in 1978 by Johnny "Rotten" Lydon at the dissolution of the Sex Pistols.

After the formation of the group, the latter publishes a first studio album, Public Image: First Issue (1978), which is characterized by an abrasive musical style with elements of dub reggae, noise music, and progressive rock >>>. Their second album, Metal Box (1979), takes avant-garde style even further, and is often considered one of the most innovative and influential albums of the post-punk era.

In 1984, Levene and Wobble leave the group, which leaves in the direction of Lydon, and publish several other albums, such as This Is What You Want ... This Is What You Get (1984). After a break in the 1990s, Lydon reformed the group and released more albums, so the last, What the World Needs Now ..., in 2015.

Following the separation of the Sex Pistols in January 1978, Lydon made a three-week trip to Jamaica with Virgin Records boss Richard Branson, during which Lydon helped search for new reggae artists. The latter will propose an offer to the Devo group which will decline it. After these holidays, Lydon steps Jah Wobble (born John Wardle) to launch a new group. This connection seemed natural: they had been friends since the 1970s, had played together occasionally during the last days of the Sex Pistols and were both avid fans of reggae and what will be called later world music. John Lydon saw no obstacle to Wobble learning to play bass after joining the band, just like he did with his friend Sid Vicious, the replacement for the original mid-bass sex pistols Glen Matlock. -parcours.
