Turisas

Turisas is a Finnish folk metal band from Hämeenlinna. The group, founded in 1997 by Mathias Nygård and Jussi Wickström, enters the category of Viking Metal evoking epic feelings and themes from Nordic folklore. It takes its name from Iku-Turso, sea monster and god of war in Finnish mythology.

The group was founded in 1997 in Hämeenlinna, Finland, by Mathias Nygård and Jussi Wickström>. In the beginning, the group is called Köyliö, but will change soon during 1998-1999 for Turisas>. This name is inspired by a god from Finnish mythology. The two later recruit three other musicians, like them, inspired by heavy metal and pagan folklore: percussionist Tude Lehtonen, keyboardist Antti Ventola, and guitarist Georg Laakso. This line-up makes a first attempt to record under the title of Taiston Tie in 1998, but its release will never happen because the group is dissatisfied with the result. In 2000, a demo CD, The Heart of Turisas , was distributed to the public, the trade press, and the recording industry during 'a concert.

Century Media, interested in their talent, signs the group in 2003>. The same label allows the band to release their first album, "Battle Metal" on August 2, 2004 >>>. This one is recorded between January 2003 and April 2004 in studios in France (in Marseille, in the studios of "Sound Suite Studio", the same having worked with Tristania) and in Finland.

On October 28, 2005, guitarist Georg Laakso was seriously injured in a car accident, touching him on the spinal cord >>>. On July 12, 2006, he announced on the official website his departure from the group>.
