As I Lay Dying was formed in San Diego in February 2001 by Tim Lambesis, former guitarist of the band Society's Finest, when he contacted the drummer Jordan Mancino to propose him to form a metal band. He also evolves on the local metal scene at this time and as he does not participate in any musical project active enough for his taste, he accepts the offer. Guitarist Evan White joins them and, with Tim Lambesis as singer, the band records a demo. The band signs at Pluto Records then starts the recording of his first album, Beneath the Encasing of Ashes ; in addition to the initial trio, Noah Chase, on the bass guitar, and Johnny Utah, on vocals, came to expand the ranks of the band. The album is published by Pluto Records on June 12, 2001 >>>>>.

In the summer of 2002, the band recorded five new songs for the split CD As I Lay Dying / American Tragedy (American Tragedy is another metalcore band from San Diego), also distributed by Pluto Records since June 2002 >>>.
