Before his separation in 2016, the band was in contract with Metal Blade Records. Bolt Thrower will forge a sound and a reputation despite frequent singer changes. Games Workshop also has them for a while produced via a subsidiary Warhammer Records.

Bolt Thrower was formed in September 1986 as a thrash / punk band, largely influenced by bands such as Slayer, Crass and Discharge. The band is founded by bassist Gavin Ward and guitarist Barry Thomson in a pub in Coventry during a hardcore punk concert. Soon after his training, Andrew Whale and Alan West join the group on drums and vocals, respectively. In April 1987, this line-up recorded the demo In Battle There Is No Law .
