Cat Power , real name Charlyn Marie "Chan" Marshall , born January 21, 1972 in Atlanta, Georgia , is an American singer and songwriter. Cat Power's musical style is minimalist and sparse, especially at the beginning of his career.

After leaving high school, Chan Marshall leaves for New York where he is asked to do the first part of Liz Phair >>>. During the tour, she meets Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth, and Tim Foljahn of Two Dollar Guitar. They decide to help him record his music. Young, Marshall learns herself to play the guitar.

His first album, Dear Sir , is recorded at the same time as the second, Myra Lee . Both albums are released one year apart, on different labels. She signed with Matador Records in 1996, and released her third album, What Would the Community Think , recorded in Memphis, Tennessee, in February? same year>. The single Nude As the News which fits in the grunge vein of the moment is extracted from this new album. The promotion is ensured by a video clip.
