In 2003 Van Eede formed the Grinning Souls group. This group independently released the album Capture in 2005. The following year, Van Eede made the decision to reissue the album under the title Grinning Souls, this time by crediting Cutting Crew. Grinning Souls (the band) becomes Cutting Crew for live recordings. The group tours in Germany, Canada and Switzerland with, among others, ABC, Berlin, Wang Chung, Supertramp, Level 42 and Midge Ure. In 2008, Cutting Crew signed to the Spectra Records label.
