Deicide is an American death metal band from Tampa, Florida.
First called Amon, the group was formed in Florida in 1987. It composed two demos, Feasting the Beast in 1987 then Sacrificial in 1989. Shortly after, the band chose his final name and released his first album of the same name .
Bassist and singer Glen Benton has an inverted cross on his forehead. Deicide has sold about 400,000 copies of his album Legion, which is a record in death metal. Deicide proclaims himself Satanist and the theme of all their songs is opposed to Christianity. They are forbidden to play in many places like other groups of the same style.
In the 1990s, while Deicide was performing in Stockholm as part of a tour with the Dutch Gorefest, a bomb exploded near the room where the group plays. While there are indications that an operation conducted by organizations similar to the ALF is retaliatory against the group whose words advocate animal sacrifice, Glen Benton blames the attack on extremist fans of Black metal, groups of activists in "open war" against American death metal groups like Cannibal Corpse and Deicide, considered as a commercial and parodic musical drift of Satanist philosophy>.
Deicide was formed on July 21, 1987 in Tampa, Florida, when Glen Benton received a phone call from guitarist Brian Hoffman responding to an advertisement he published in a local magazine. Hoffman, his brother and drummer Steve Asheim, are former members of a band called Carnage, which was short of bass and singer. Carnage took songs from Slayer, Exodus, Celtic Frost and Dark Angel.
The new band, called Amon, consists of Benton (bass and vocals), Hoffman, his brother Eric (guitar) and Steve Asheim (drums). In one month, they record the eight-track Feasting the Beast demo in Benton's garage and play from time to time in the suburbs of Tampa. In 1989, Amon recorded his second demo, Sacrificial, at Morrisound Recording Studios, with producer Scott Burns. The guitarist Phil Fasciana, from the band Malevolent Creation, remembers one of the first concerts performed by Carnage: "It was Slayer but a thousand times more intense At Carnage, they had caught a mannequin they had filled with blood and guts coming from the butcher's shop ... then they swung it on the floor. Morbid Angel dropped pitbulls that shredded all that. It was really lame, man. There was barbaque everywhere. "
