Devendra Banhart was born in 1981 in Houston, United States. His name comes from an Indian mystic, whom his parents followed. His parents divorced 2 years after his birth and his mother took him to live in Venezuela. His mother remarries and the family thus recomposed returns to live in Los Angeles. Devendra wrote her first songs at the age of 12.
