Finntroll is a Finnish folk metal band from Helsinki. They combine elements of folk metal, black metal and death metal with humppa, a Finnish variety of polka. Finntroll's songs are in Swedish and are interpreted by a characteristic black metal voice on a background of instruments from Finnish folklore. In fact, Katla, the first singer of the group, decides to sing in Swedish because it is his mother tongue since he comes from a Swedish minority in Finland and that the sound of Swedish seems to better correspond to the theme of the group. Despite several changes of singers, this tradition is preserved.
Finntroll's name is inspired by an old Finnish legend where Swedish priests coming to Finland met a wild-looking man who killed the majority of their group. The survivors came back with the legend of Finn-Troll . Finntroll's lyrics deal mainly with the legends and tales surrounding the fictional troll king Rivfader (the "father-ripper" ) and trolls fighting against the Christian invasion of their lands so to spread their beliefs. A recurring theme is the story of two priests named Aamund and Kettil. The first three albums present a song about the two men who find themselves constantly struggling with the trolls to finally be beaten and maimed many times by the Rivfader faithful angry.
The group's discography includes six long-duration albums and two EPs. They released their album Blodsvept on March 25, 2013. In June 2014, they released their long-awaited live album, Natten Med De Levande Finntroll.
