iRATE is a free software under the GNU General Public License that allows you to download free music (Creative Commons, License Art Libre) in MP3 format. It is programmed in java, compiled with GCJ, and uses the java-swt-GTK software library under Linux.
The principle is relatively simple: after launching the software, pieces of music are randomly downloaded. The user can then evaluate them (rate in English) and delete those you do not like. If it does not listen to a song in its entirety (which is not evaluated), the download stops; but he starts again as soon as he listens again.
The website states that in early 2005 there were over 40,000 pieces in the catalog.
