Jane's Addiction is an American rock band from Los Angeles, California. For most of their career, the band included singer Perry Farrell, bassist Eric Avery, guitarist Dave Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins. After breaking up in 1991, Jane's Addiction toured briefly in 1997, met in 2001 and set out again in 2004. The group reconvened in 2008. The varied musical style of Jane's Addiction is influenced by punk rock, heavy metal, post-punk, and psychedelic rock.
Jane's Addiction was one of the first alternative rock bands to gain media attention and commercial success in the United States. Their first farewell tour launches the first Lollapalooza festival, an annual alternative rock tour. As a result, Jane's Addiction will become the icon of what Farrell calls the "alternative nation" in the 1990s.
Jane's Addiction is formed on the ashes of Perry Farrell's group, Psi-com. In the summer of 1985, Perry Farrell was looking for a new bassist for his new band when he was introduced to Eric Avery. Farrell and Avery shared a mutual appreciation for bands like Joy Division and The Velvet Underground and started playing together. Later, Eric's sister introduced the duo to Stephen Perkins with whom she was dating at the time. Perkins then suggests hiring his friend Dave Navarro (with whom they played in the band Dizastre) as a guitarist. The group is then named Jane's Addiction in tribute to Jane Bainter, roommate Perry Farrell and notorious toxic.
The training quickly became a sensation in the Los Angeles underground scene, many record companies were quickly interested in the group that finally signs at Warner Bros. However, the band insists on releasing their first album on an independent label. The live album, entitled Jane's Addiction, was released in 1987 at Triple X Records>. Then in 1988 released the album Nothing's Shocking at Warner. The ultimate alternative rock album of the late 1980s or early 1990s, this album contains hits such as Mountain Song or Ocean Size as well as the Jane Says, Pigs in Zen (already featured on Jane's Addiction), Had a Dad or Summertime Rolls, is worth several Grammy nominations. The album will be certified platinum double disc.
