Gerald "Jerry" Herman is a composer, lyricist and American pianist, born July 10, 1931 in New York, NY.

Raised in Jersey City, New Jersey, in a middle-class Jewish family, Jerry Herman was educated at the University of Miami and moved to New York City. He will be mainly active as a composer and lyricist in the theater. On Broadway, he works for the first time (for additional songs) on the magazine From A to Z (in) - also collaborated by Woody Allen -, produced in 1960. Subsequently, he is primarily the author of musicals.

Three of them are very successful, starting with Hello, Dolly !, staged and choreographed by Gower Champion, with Carol Channing and David Burns (en) , represented 2,844 times from January 1964 to December 1970. Mame, directed by Gene Saks, with Angela Lansbury and Beatrice Arthur, is played 1,508 times from May 1966 to January 1970. Finally, La Cage aux folles (after the eponymous play by Jean Poiret), directed by Arthur Laurents, with Gene Barry and George Hearn (en) , is given 1,761 times from August 1983 to November 1987.
