Joy Division / d͡ʒ ɔ ɪ D ɪ v ɪ ʒ < span title = "[ə]" e "in" chorus "."> ə n / is a British rock band from Manchester, England, formed in 1976 by Ian Curtis, Peter H Oook, Stephen Morris and Bernard Sumner.
Part of the post-punk movement and considered as one of the initiators of the cold wave (cold wave in French), Joy Division is also the l one of the precursor groups and "godfathers of Gothic rock" >>>>>>>. The iconic figure of this formation is its singer Ian Curtis, at the "mortal voice" "sepulchral storyteller" .
The group, clearing new territories, dissolved in May 1980 after the suicide of Curtis at the age of 23 years. Bayon writes in Libération: "our gothic James Dean threw himself into life, that is, emptiness" . For the critic Jon Savage, Ian Curtis was able to describe the city of Manchester in "capturing its space and its claustrophobia in a modern Gothic style" .
Only two albums were produced; the first demos have since been reissued in CD format. The remaining three members of the group formed New Order a few months later with Gillian Gilbert.
