The band was formed in 2002 by German guitarist Steffen Kummerer. The band's very first band performs a few concerts, mini-tours and festivals under the direction of V.Santura (Dark Fortress) before recording a first demo >>>. During the preparations for the first album Retribution, the majority of members leave the group. Their first album, Retribution, was finally recorded with Alex Krull (Atrocity) in 2004, but due to scheduling and financial issues, the album was officially released in 2006 >>>. On the album, V. Santura participates in some vocal parts. The album includes a cover of lack of Death Group's Lack of Understanding, which, according to the members, faithfully repeats the song>.

After another training change, their first European tour was with Markus Lempsch as second guitarist, and Jonas Fischer on bass in 2006 in support of Suffocation. Also in the same year, they play in several major festivals such as Up from the Ground, Mountains of Death and Brutal Assault. Markus Lempsch leaves the group in early 2007, and is replaced by Johannes Rennig (Profanity); in the summer of 2007, founding member Jonas Baumgartl also left the group. In 2007, bassist Jeroen Paul Thesseling (ex-Pestilence) and drummer Hannes Grossmann (ex-Necrophagist) joined the band, followed the next year by guitarist Christian Muenzner, also a former member of Necrophagist >>>.

After the pre-production recording of three tracks of their new album Cosmogenesis, Obscura signed with the label Relapse Records in 2008, and released the following year Cosmogenesis >>>. This is the second group after Necrophagist to sign at Relapse Records>. It's with Cosmogenesis that Obscura's career will really take off, following the very good feedback from the press and the public. It involves Ron Jarzombek (Watchtower, Spastic Ink) and Tymon Kruidenier (Cynic). It is also published in vinyl format. V.Santura participates again in the production, and contributes to four vocal pieces >>>>>. The writing of the album begins just after the release of Retribution , and many of the songs were already written between 2004 and 2007. In overall, the recordings last about three months in the studio. The result is a significant number of concerts, including a European tour with Cannibal Corpse in April 2009, as well as a Japan tour with Nile and Triptykon.
