OneRepublic is an American pop rock band from Colorado Springs, Colorado. After a few years of mixed success, they attract the attention of the general public with the release of their singles Apologize and Stop and Stare. Apologize was the most legally downloaded song in 2008 in the United States with sales of more than five million digital downloads>. The band has more than five million albums sold outside the United States, totaling more than nine million Apologize singles and more than two million Stop and Stare. A remix of Apologize is featured on Timbaland's album Shock Value and the debut album of Dreaming Out Loud.
In 1996, Ryan Tedder and Zach Filkins, two high school students at Colorado Springs Christian High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado, decided to form a rock band with friends. After high school, Tedder and Filkins separate to go to different universities >>>.
In 2002, they meet in Los Angeles and form their second group under the name Republic. Tedder convinced Filkins, who lived in Chicago, to move. Nine months later, they signed a contract with Columbia Records. Eddie Fisher, Brent Kutzle, and Drew Brown join Tedder and Filkins. They change their group name for OneRepublic after their label mentioned that the name Republic could bring them problems with other groups. The band works for two and a half years for their first album and gets a big hit on MySpace. They attract the attention of several labels such as Timbaland Mosley Music Group.
