The theme of the song was inspired to Peter Gabriel by a recurring dream where he found himself swimming in a sea "red" . He explains it in Mojo magazine. Hi-hat cymbals are used in the song to simulate the sound of rain, and are played by Stewart Copeland, the drummer of The Police.
