When he was born in London on 19 May 1992, his father, Frederick Smith, was a housewife and his mother was Kate Cassidy, a broker. His studies started as a pupil of the "Youth Music Theater and by jousting in their production Oh! Carol in 2007 before joining jazz bands. For a few years, Smith studied singing and songwriting with jazz singer and pianist Joanna Eden (in ) , and participates in the Bishop's Stortford Junior Operatics of the renowned Cantate Youth Choir. In 2009, her mother was fired for spending too much time on Sam Smith's career, to the detriment of her work, which she denies.
