Simon and Garfunkel [ Ə L ] is an American duo of folk rock, native of Forest Hills, Queens, New York, consisting of guitarist and singer-songwriter Paul Simon and singer Arthur Garfunkel, both of whom meet for the first time in Queens in 1953. They learn about 'tune in with each other and start writing their own compositions.They know their first success in 1957, under the name of Tom & Jerry, with the song Hey Schoolgirl , who imitates the style of their Everly Brothers idols, but this success is unconfirmed and then they continue their university studies on their own.They find themselves in 1963, with an increased interest in folk music, and sign a contract with Columbia Records. The popularity of the duet increases with the soundtrack of the film The Laureate (1967), composed for the most part by their songs. Their next album, Bookends (1968), propels them to the rank of major international stars. Nevertheless, the relationship between the two men deteriorated and the duo separated shortly after the release of their next album, Bridge over Troubled Water (1970) which is their biggest commercial success.
Simon and Garfunkel are among the most popular artists of the 1960s and are considered icons of the counterculture of this decade, along with the Beatles and Bob Dylan.
