Simon and Garfunkel [ Ə L ] is an American duo of folk rock, native of Forest Hills, Queens, New York, consisting of guitarist and singer-songwriter Paul Simon and singer Arthur Garfunkel, both of whom meet for the first time in Queens in 1953. They learn about 'tune in with each other and start writing their own compositions.They know their first success in 1957, under the name of Tom & Jerry, with the song Hey Schoolgirl , who imitates the style of their Everly Brothers idols, but this success is unconfirmed and then they continue their university studies on their own.They find themselves in 1963, with an increased interest in folk music, and sign a contract with Columbia Records. Their first album, Wednesday Morning, 3 AM (1964), was a commercial failure when it was released and the duo broke up, Simon deciding to continue his solo career in England.

However, a new version of their song The Sound of Silence was successful on the US airwaves in 1965 and reached the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100. The duo then reformed and recorded a second album, Sounds of Silence (1966), which was quickly followed by Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme (1966), album on which the duo takes a greater creative control. The popularity of the duet increases with the soundtrack of the film The Laureate (1967), composed for the most part by their songs. Their next album, Bookends (1968), propels them to the rank of major international stars. Nevertheless, the relationship between the two men deteriorated and the duo separated shortly after the release of their next album, Bridge over Troubled Water (1970) which is their biggest commercial success.

Simon and Garfunkel are among the most popular artists of the 1960s and are considered icons of the counterculture of this decade, along with the Beatles and Bob Dylan. Their most famous songs, The Sound of Silence , I Am a Rock < / span>, Homeward Bound , Scarborough Fair / Canticle , In Hazy Shade of Winter , Mrs. Robinson , Bridge over Troubled Water , lang = "en"> The Boxer , Cecilia and El Cóndor Pasa ( If I Could ) have all been very successful internationally.
