Syd Matters is a French band created in 2002 and led by Jonathan Morali (born in Paris on May 22, 1980). Mixing folk and melancholy pop, their music mixes slow melodies with acoustic instruments without, however, denying electronic roots.
Syd Matters was the first winner of the CQFD contest organized by Les Inrockuptibles. As a Pink Floyd admirer, Jonathan Morali chose the name of Syd Matters in reference to the founding member of the UK group, Syd Barrett (in English, "Syd Matters" means "Syd Matches", "Syd Matters").
Jonathan Morali's debut A Whisper and a Sigh, recorded in the summer of 2002, was released in 2003 at Third Side Records. Following his signature with this label, he decides to find musicians to support him on stage. He is accompanied by two keyboardist-guitarists, including Rémi Alexandre, then bassist Jean-Yves Lozac'h and drummer Clément Carle. At the end of the promotional tour of the album, in September 2004, the multi-instrumentalist Olivier Marguerit joined the band.
