Violator

Violator is the 7> studio album of Depeche Mode, released March 19, 1990. Considered as the band's best album to date for its inventive and innovative production qualities, it was a major artistic success and commercial.

Desiring to approach a new artistic approach, the group is changing its way of working on two fundamental points. The models of Martin L. Gore submitted to the group before each entry into the studio were previously quite accomplished and required more work "fignolage" than real production work. Martin Gore is asked to bring as clean pieces as possible. As for the second point, it concerns the production of the album by the producer Flood.

The addition of Flood plus the perfectionism of Alan Wilder and François Kevorkian is decisive. The first single, "Personal Jesus", is a marriage between blues rock and electronic music previously unpublished in the discography of the group: this title was a major success in the US.

The title Violator, which is a double reference to violation of the law and sexual violence, is also a nod to the aggressive names of heavy metal bands. The image of the rose adorning the cover contrasts with this provocative title.
