Being as an Ocean was formed in 2011, after the Vanguard group, in which all founding members were found, was dissolved. The name of the group comes from a quote from Mahatma Gandhi; "You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is like an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty. "

Guitarist Tyler Ross wrote the entire first album just after the formation of the band. The sound demos "The Hardest Part Is Forgetting Those You Swore You Would Never Forget" and "Humble Servant, Am I" were added to their MySpace page on January 4, 2011. The tracks of Dear Gd ... have been recorded in a hotel called The Palms and sent to Brian Hood for mixing and mastering. The first single from the album, "Dear G-d", was released on January 3, 2012 and was unanimously well received. Soon after, Jacob Perst joined the band as a rhythm guitarist. Being as an Ocean has toured 10 countries, including Canada, Ukraine, Georgia, The United Kingdom and Australia with bands such as Counterparts, Hundredth, Sierra, Liferuiner, Napoleon, and The Elijah. They released a Dear-G-d "b-side" album entitled "The People Who Share My Name" in 2012.

In 2013, Shad Hamawe and Jacob Perst left the band to lead their lives outside, because of the schedule of tours they thought was too busy. The remaining members then continue to record while seeking other members to replace them. Connor Denis, from the hardcore punk group Sleep Patterns, joins the band as a new drummer. With this new band, they begin writing and recording their new album, which will be released in 2014. Michael McGough, from the post-hardcore band The Elijah, was also introduced as the group's new guitarist. On February 25, they will reveal the cover of the album, How We Both Wondrously Perish and announce the date of its release. An album title, Death's Great Black Wing Scrapes the Air, is available on iTunes. The album was recorded in Atlanta, Georgia at Glow Studios in the Dark Studios and was released on May 6, 2014.
