Coal Chamber is one of the forerunners of the nu metal style, participating in the emergence of internationally renowned groups such as Slipknot and System of a Down> in the 1990s.

The group was formed in 1993 by Miguel "Meegs" Rascón and Dez Fafara in 1994, then joined by Mickey "Bug" Cox , on drums, and Rayna Foss-Rose, on bass. By the end of 1994, thanks to a demo of the group making a real buzz at the local level, Coal Chamber is offered the opportunity to sign with the label Roadrunner Records. This sudden success is among others allowed by Dino Cazares, guitarist of the famous group Fear Factory, who recommends it. However, due to a disagreement with his wife about the band, Dez refuses. It ended up changing in the spring of 1995, allowing the group to reach an agreement at the end of the year>.

Their eponymous debut, released in 1997, allows the band to emerge from the Los Angeles metal scene, making them meet their first successes. Two years later, in 1999, released their second album, Chamber Music, which meets a less important success. Before the tour begins, Rayna Foss-Rose gets pregnant which forces her to withdraw. She is then replaced by Nadja Peulen>.
