Procol Harum is a British progressive rock band from London, England. Formed in 1967, the band is one of the major precursors of the genre.

His first hit, A Whiter Shade of Pale, ranked No. 1 in the United Kingdom and No. 5 in the United States, was a global hit and is still featured in polls as one of the best pieces of pop music ever written.

In the mid-1960s, singer-songwriter Gary Brooker, who had appeared on the ephemeral band The Paramounts, which featured Robin Trower and Chris Copping, met poet Keith Reid. Together they write several songs that they propose to popular artists, like The Beach Boys, but without success. Deciding then to interpret them themselves, they recruit organist Matthew Fisher, guitarist Ray Royer and bassist David Knights to form a group they call Procol Harum. This strange name, which is that of the cat of one of their friends, has often been wrongly considered as meaning in Latin "beyond things".
